Christian Jaramillo calls himself a cultural hybrid having been grown up Bogota, Colombia, before he was moving to Europe more than 10 years ago. His personal cultural experience is inin fluenced from multiple diverse directions such as the indigenous ancestors of Colombia, the Spanish colonial era, an African spirit deriving from the slaves brought to South-America, as well as the central European culture he become acquainted with lately. This variety of emotional, historical and visual forces becomes closely faced to each other, mixed and even hybridized in his work. His paintings repetitively contain symbols such as skulls, birds, flowers, or certain animals which stay for life, freedom, nature, or in converse war, slavery, destruction. Often, the concept of a certain composition is initally derived from European master pieces of art going back to the Renaissance or Baroque era. Most of his works can be read in a narrative way pointing to several important aspects of Colombian history. Many contain a subtle criticism on regime and church concerning abuse of power, and also devastation of nature and wildlife are topics in his focus. His thoughts are devoted to the affliction of the poor and other minor groups. Although his work is somehow closely related to Colombian history and tradition, the topics, he is touching, are of general relevance and are preserving a frightening topicality even nowadays.
